The Italian stage of biologic, natural, organic, biodynamic wine shows a vast array of associations set up to gather winemakers sharing a common philosophy.

We are talking about Triple A, Renaissance des Appellations, Vini Veri, Vinnatur. Everyone has its own code of conduct&production but shares the same philosophy. Everyone independent but together.

The movement was born in 2001 by Luca Gargano to offer non standardized products due to the fact that more and more wines are being produced using agricoltural and enological techniques that humiliates the footprint of the vine, terrorir and personality of the winemaker.

Luca Gargano was influenced by Serge Hochar (Chateau Musar, Liban) and the Enologist Giorgio Grai.

Triple A means Agricolture, Artisans, Artists.

The Commandments are:

  1. manual selection of vines: massal selection

  2. avoid any synthetics chemicals, respecting naturali vine lifecycle

  3. healthy grapes, phisiological ripening

  4. no addition of SO2 nor additives on musts

  5. use of indigenous yeasts (excluding selected yeasts)

  6. no phisical or chemical interventions before or after the fermentation (admitted only temperature control). No must concentration

  7. slow maturation of the wine on its lees till bottling

  8. no adjustment of any chemical parameter

  9. no clarification nor filtration before bottling

  10. expressing the terroir as its best

Today Triple A gathers 86 winemakers from Austria, Cile, Croatia, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Liban, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Swiss, Turkey.

RENAISSANCE DES APPELLATIONS http://renaissance-italia.it/

The movement was born thanks to a group of vignerons among them Stefano Bellotti was the most important.

The aim is to give a new-birth (or "Renaissance") to DOC/DOCG weakened by the use of chemicals that have been leading to the industrial and enological homogenisation of taste and flavour.

In order to recover the original meaning of the DOC/DOCG it has been adopted biological and biodynamic practices. It involves three levels

1. Certification for biological agricolture (3 years after conversion) and biodynamic (2 years),

  • avoid herbicides and chemical fertilizers

  • supply of organic compost

  • OMG plants are forbidden

  • selected industrial aroma yeast are forbidden. Only indigenous yeast are used

  • chips forbidden

  • inverse osmosis and any chemical of phisical treatments to lower the volatile acidity are forbidden

  • precipitating agents are forbidden

  • Potassium Sorbate and Ascorbic Acid are forbidden. SO2 is admitted if necessary (proceeding from mustard, radish...or of vulcanic origin)

  • New oak is forbidden

  • Respect for the natural process of fermentation. Avoid Nitrogen addition (suplphate, phosphate...), fermetation activators (vitamins, tiamins, yeast peels) or bacterias/enzymes

2. Level two

  • Massal selection to respect biodiversity. Avoid clones

  • Respect for the natural environment of plants (weather and soil). No irrigation

  • Manual harvest. No mechanization

  • All industrial process in vinification stage (concentration, crio extraction...) forbidden

  • No modification or alteration of must or wine (no acidification or deacidification)

  • No Arabic Gum

3. Level three

  • Manual harvest. Tries are admitted

  • No sterile filtration if less the 2 micron. No spin cycles

  • No fish glue

  • Certification of biologic/biodynamic agricolture accomplished for 7 years

  • Respet for any natural condition of plants development

Today Renaissance des Appellations gathers 47 winemakers in Italy. It was founded in 2001 by Nicholas Joly see. https://renaissance-des-appellations.com/fr/ and counts 230 winemakers: Germany, Australia, Austria, Brasil, Chile, Spain, USA, France, Georgia, Hungary, New Zealand, Portugal, Canada, Serbia, Slovenia, Swiss.
